United Airlines Enhances Mobile App with New Features Amid TSA Staff Shortages
United Airlines is enhancing its iOS and Android mobile applications by introducing several new features, including estimated security wait times to assist travelers in planning their airport arrival times. This initiative comes in response to a partial government shutdown that has resulted in understaffed TSA checkpoints.
Real-Time Security Wait Times Available for Major Airports
Within the “Travel” section of the United mobile app, users can now access real-time security wait times at the airline’s major U.S. hub airports, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. The app offers estimated wait times for both standard security and TSA PreCheck lanes across terminals serving United customers, helping them make informed decisions about when to arrive.
Commitment to Customer Service During TSA Challenges
Jason Birnbaum, United’s Chief Information Officer, emphasized the importance of this new feature in a recent press release. “We appreciate the work and professionalism of our TSA agents. As they begin to receive back pay, travelers want to stay informed about expected security wait times,” he stated. “Our customers rely on our app for all their travel needs, and this update allows them to better prepare for their journeys.”

Streamlined Navigation for Connecting Flights
The mobile app is also introducing enhancements tailored for passengers with connecting flights. Users can now receive personalized, turn-by-turn directions to their next gates, complete with estimated walking times, real-time updates, and tips for longer layovers. Additionally, the app will issue alerts if United is able to hold a flight for passengers with tight connections, further improving the travel experience.
Automatic Rebooking Assistance Features
In a bid to streamline the customer experience during flight disruptions, the app will feature automatic rebooking assistance. Instead of waiting in line for an agent or manually searching for alternatives, travelers will be presented with rebooking options through United’s self-service tools. These options will include details on baggage tracking, as well as meal and hotel vouchers if applicable, in the event of a flight delay or cancellation.
Enhanced Baggage Tracking with AirTag Integration
United’s app is also integrating Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature, allowing travelers who use AirTags or other Find My network accessories to share the location of their belongings with United’s customer service team, should their baggage go missing. This added functionality is designed to improve the recovery process for lost items and enhance customer peace of mind.
Real-Time Weather Updates Impacting Flight Operations
To keep travelers informed about potential disruptions, users will receive text updates featuring real-time radar maps, indicating how severe weather in one region may affect flights in another. This proactive approach facilitates better travel planning, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.
