Sonder Redefines the Dating App Experience
The founders of Sonder grew weary of encountering dating profiles that often hyperbolized mundane opinions, like the divisive topic of pineapple on pizza. Recognizing the limitations of traditional dating apps, co-founder Mehedi Hassan shared insights with TechCrunch, stating, “We didn’t learn that people are frustrated through user calls or interviews; we learned it from our own experiences. We realized that this can’t be the only option.”
A New Approach to Digital Connections
Asserting that current dating platforms often feel like a disheartening lottery, Hassan and his three companions aimed to develop an application that prioritizes the user experience. The four London-based founders—Mehedi Hassan, Helen Sun, Lenard Pratt, and Hannah Kin—envisioned Sonder as a refreshing departure from the conventional, aiming for an environment reminiscent of social media platforms like Pinterest and MySpace, despite their youth during MySpace’s heyday.
Pioneering a User-Centric Experience
Co-founder Helen Sun elaborated on the existing dating app models, which initially aimed to lower barriers and facilitate connections for introverts. “While those intentions were noble,” she noted, “the evolution of these apps has led to monotony and user burnout due to a loss of authenticity.” Sonder’s profiles are deliberately unstructured, prompting users to create personalized mood boards or digital collages that better express their individuality.

Engaging Community Events
Sonder not only promotes online interactions but also organizes whimsical real-life events, ranging from “Speed Drawing” to the unique “Performative Male Contest.” These gatherings provide an inviting atmosphere for users to meet others, removing the pressure often associated with dating-focused events. As a result, the platform is versatile, catering to both platonic and romantic interests, making the experience less daunting for participants.
Diverse Social Opportunities
Recurring events play a crucial role in Sonder’s strategy. “It’s beneficial when regular attendees return,” Sun described. “Our format mirrors that of running clubs, offering reoccurring chances to connect without the immediate pressure of making a lasting impression.” While some may find the running club dynamic appealing for its dual purpose of fitness and socializing, Hassan admits, “I hate running,” highlighting the need for diverse options that resonate with varied interests.
Innovation Amidst Established Players
Sonder isn’t the only startup acknowledging the desire for in-person connections; even established platforms like Tinder are incorporating real-life experiences to attract users. However, early-stage companies like Sonder can leverage their fresh image to draw consumers. Sun believes that rekindling authentic in-person interactions is vital: “Meeting someone for the first time should feel special, not like swiping through job applications.”
The Role of AI in User Engagement
While major dating apps implement advanced features like AI-powered assistants, Sonder approaches artificial intelligence more subtly. Hassan, who also works in product engineering for Granola, an AI-driven note-taking app, understands that users may be wary of intrusive technologies in their dating lives. Sonder employs AI to suggest matches by analyzing user profiles, but Hassan is determined to keep the focus on genuine human interaction, stating, “Once you start using AI to generate profiles, you lose the human touch.”
Although Sonder has yet to secure funding and its founders balance their work on the app with full-time jobs, Hassan envisions a day when they can operate it full-time while continuing to cultivate the London-based community. “Our lives are pretty exhausting, juggling nine-to-five jobs with hosting events,” he reflected. “However, seeing the genuine connections that form, as evidenced by the smiles and conversations, makes all the effort worthwhile.”
