Enhancing Patient Care Through AI: St. Luke’s Health System and Ambience Healthcare

St. Luke’s Health System in Idaho is revolutionizing patient care by partnering with Ambience Healthcare to implement AMIA-AI technology. This innovative solution is designed to summarize a patient’s history efficiently, encompassing 18 months of medical visits in just two to three concise chips.

Revolutionizing Patient Visit Summaries

The AI technology utilized extracts pertinent data from a patient’s graphic and CareeveryWhere system, both powered by Epic’s DSE. This platform facilitates the sharing of comprehensive patient data across different healthcare organizations, ensuring streamlined and effective communication among providers.

Efficient Analysis of Patient History

Each patient visit is meticulously summarized by the AI, which processes both structured and unstructured notes, analyzing vital data over the past 18 months. Summaries include critical information such as hospital discharges, emergency room visits, and specialized consultations, making it easier for physicians to access essential details quickly.

Direct Access to Source Notes

One of the standout features of this technology is its ability to link summaries to source notes. This ensures that doctors can delve deeper into a patient’s medical history if needed, eliminating the frustrating “electronic treasure hunt” often experienced when searching for buried summaries in extensive documentation.

Streamlining Physician Workflow

Ambience Healthcare emphasizes the value of this tool for clinicians who are frequently on the move. Dr. Trevor Satterfield, the director of medical information at St. Luke’s, notes that being able to access a patient’s history in mere seconds significantly enhances the efficiency of patient interactions. This is crucial for maintaining high levels of patient engagement and care quality.

Cost Savings and Enhanced Coding Precision

According to a KLAS report, the collaboration between St. Luke’s and Ambience Healthcare has resulted in savings of over $13,000 per clinician annually. This cost reduction is attributed to improved HCC capture and enhanced coding precision in Evaluation and Management (E/M) services, highlighting the financial benefits of implementing AI technology.

Optimizing Time with Electronic Health Records

On average, ambulatory physicians spend around 16 minutes per patient visit interacting with electronic health records. Notably, about one-third of this time—approximately five minutes—is dedicated solely to reviewing graphical data. The introduction of AI-generated summaries aims to reduce this time commitment, enabling healthcare providers to focus more on patient care rather than documentation.
