Bluesky Introduces AI Assistant for Custom Feeds
The team at Bluesky has launched a new application, diverging from its traditional social networking model. This time, the focus is on an AI assistant named Attie, designed to empower users to create custom algorithms and personalized feeds. Eventually, users will even have the capability to develop their own applications.
New AI App Unveiled at Atmosphere Conference
During the Atmosphere conference, Bluesky’s former CEO Jay Graber, now the chief innovation officer, along with Chief Technology Officer Paul Frazee, presented Attie to attendees. These individuals will serve as the initial beta testers for this innovative app, which utilizes Anthropic’s Claude technology to offer an agentic social experience built upon Bluesky’s AT Protocol (or atproto).
Stand-Alone App with Unique Features
Interim CEO Toni Schneider emphasized that Attie is not integrated into the existing Bluesky platform. While the company has previously released various features such as Starter Packs and custom feeds within Bluesky, this AI assistant marks the emergence of a standalone product developed by Graber’s newly formed team.
Custom Feed Creation Made Easy
Attie simplifies the process of building custom feeds through natural language commands, resembling a chat with an AI chatbot. Users will authenticate via their Atmosphere login, a requirement for any app utilizing atproto, including Bluesky. This ensures that Attie recognizes user preferences and interests, as Bluesky promotes an open data-sharing system among apps.
Empowering Users with Versatile Tools
With Attie, users can inquire about potential posts to see or share, and the app facilitates the curation of personalized content. Schneider noted that the app allows users to shape their feeds without needing coding skills, representing a significant step toward enabling broader participation in the Atmosphere ecosystem.
AI Focused on User Needs
Schneider remarked that although Attie is an AI-driven product, its design remains fundamentally user-centric. The goal is to leverage AI’s capabilities to create solutions beneficial to individuals, rather than merely catering to platform interests.
Future Ambitions and Funding Insights
At its launch, Attie will enable users to build and manage custom feeds, with plans to integrate these features into Bluesky and other atproto applications. The team also aims to offer users the ability to develop their own social tools in the future. Graber, who recently redirected her focus towards product development, believes in empowering users through an open protocol that enhances their creative control.
Enhancements in Monetization and Ecosystem Stability
Bluesky has secured significant financial backing, recently announcing an additional $100 million in funding. This investment gives the company a stable runway, allowing it to address critical challenges such as enhancing privacy measures and monetizing its growing user base of 43.4 million. Despite securing backing from crypto investors, Schneider confirmed no plans for cryptocurrency integration, alleviating user concerns regarding potential scams.
Exploring Alternative Monetization Strategies
As Attie is currently in private beta, the team is exploring various monetization options, including potential subscription models and hosting services for users wishing to create their own communities. Schneider, drawing parallels between Atmosphere and WordPress, envisions a decentralized ecosystem where independent services can thrive, echoing the revenue models that have proven successful in the WordPress environment.
With a commitment to building a collaborative and vibrant platform, Bluesky aims to shape the future of social networking through innovative technology and user empowerment.
