Korea-Latin America Business Summit: Strengthening Ties for the Future

Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol at the Korea-Latin America Business Summit

Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol delivers the opening speech at the Korea-Latin America Business Summit held at the Conrad Seoul in Yeongdeungpo district, west Seoul, on October 27.

At the seventh Korea-Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Business Summit in Seoul, Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration between Korea and Latin American nations. This event also marks the 20th anniversary of Korea’s membership in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Key Areas of Cooperation

Koo highlighted three essential areas for cooperation: Artificial Intelligence (AI), critical mineral supply chains, and clean energy initiatives. He stated, “Now is the time for Korea and the LAC region to deepen their strategic partnership.”

Embracing Artificial Intelligence

In his address, Koo underscored the significance of AI, mentioning that Korea is directing substantial policy efforts towards AI-driven economic and societal transformation. He asserted that by merging Korea’s technological advancements with the LAC region’s robust digital potential, both parties can foster significant synergies that would propel innovation.

Critical Mineral Supply Chains

Additionally, Koo called for strengthening supply chains for essential minerals, noting that the LAC region holds approximately 30% of the world’s mineral reserves. “By working together, we can build safe and sustainable value chains,” he said, highlighting the importance of secure resource management for economic growth.

Advancing Clean Energy Collaboration

The minister also advocated for greater collaboration in clean energy. With Korea’s established expertise in renewable technologies, Koo envisions a cooperative effort that can significantly contribute to global energy transition initiatives. Together, they can pioneer advancements that promote a greener future.

Establishment of IDB AI Center

To further these goals, Koo announced plans to establish an IDB AI center. The aim is to enhance financing and innovation within the AI sector. This initiative underscores Korea’s commitment to a knowledge-driven economy and its strategic investment in future technologies.

As global dynamics evolve, Koo’s call for deeper ties between Korea and Latin America reflects an optimistic vision for cooperative growth and mutual benefits. The commitments made at this summit could forge strong connections that impact various sectors positively for years to come.
