Tensions Rise in CA-17 Congressional Race
The primary for California’s 17th Congressional District is scheduled for early June, but tensions are already escalating between five-term incumbent Ro Khanna and tech entrepreneur Ethan Agarwal. Agarwal, who entered the race in March, is backed by a notable group of tech billionaires. This support appears to be a direct response to Khanna’s public endorsement of a proposed California ballot measure that would impose a one-time 5% tax on individuals with net worths exceeding $1 billion.
Agarwal Targets Khanna’s Investment Decisions
Agarwal has taken aim at Khanna primarily by scrutinizing the congressman’s stock trades during his time in office. The focus on Khanna’s financial dealings reflects concerns about transparency and ethical governance, issues that resonate strongly with voters in today’s political landscape.
Anonymous Packages Ignite Controversy
In a surprising turn, newsrooms covering the CA-17 race have begun receiving anonymous packages containing digital court documents that illuminate Agarwal’s legal history. Among the documents is a substantial personal judgment of $683,000 issued against Agarwal after he ceased payments on a $2 million copyright settlement with Universal Music Group. This settlement arose from allegations that Agarwal’s company, Aaptiv, a workout app that combines audio coaching with licensed music, used recordings without proper permissions.
Legal Challenges Mount Against Agarwal
The package also reveals a nearly $2 million lawsuit from a landlord tied to Aaptiv’s office at One World Trade Center, filed in 2023 after the company defaulted on its lease during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Agarwal faced a 2019 federal lawsuit stemming from allegations that adult content was downloaded from his IP address. This lawsuit was initiated by Malibu Media, a company notorious for filing numerous similar cases across the country, often viewed as exploiting legal loopholes.
Focus Shifts to the UMG Judgment
While the landlord dispute was ultimately dropped and the Malibu Media case was settled without a finding of liability, the Universal Music Group judgment remains the most significant issue in the package. Agarwal personally guaranteed the initial $2 million settlement but stopped making payments just three months before completion. However, both parties eventually reached another settlement.
Agarwal Addresses Controversy Head-On
In an effort to control the narrative, Agarwal proactively addressed one of the more sensational stories surrounding him. Following a report by the New York Post that sensationally claimed he had been sued for downloading adult content, Agarwal took to social media to express his belief in transparency and authenticity among political candidates. He acknowledged the embarrassing nature of the allegations, stating, “We’re people. We’re not perfect. Yes, this is embarrassing. But now you know my worst thing.”
Support from High-Profile Investors
Prominent investor Chamath Palihapitiya, one of Agarwal’s key supporters, chimed in shortly after, highlighting the intensifying scrutiny Agarwal is facing. He tweeted that the opposition research against Agarwal had commenced because Khanna is starting to feel threatened by Agarwal’s rising candidacy. This political race is proving to be not just a contest for a congressional seat, but also a high-stakes examination of personal and professional legacies.
