The Rise of AI in Project Management: Insights from HIMSS25

Las Vegas – As industries turn towards digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a pivotal tool in project management, according to insights shared by Pierre Le Manh, CEO of the Project Management Institute (PMI), during an engaging discussion with Hal Wolf, CEO of HIMSS, at the HIMSS25 Executive Summit.

Shared Objectives for Digital Transformation

At the summit, Le Manh emphasized the importance of collective team meetings to align on project objectives, stating that collaboration is vital for successful digital transformations. “Defining goals together fosters a unified approach to project management,” Le Manh noted, highlighting how shared visions can drive effective outcomes.

Increasing Demand for Qualified Project Managers

With rapid advancements in healthcare and technology, the demand for proficient project managers is on the rise. Le Manh explained that successful program management relies significantly on a skilled portfolio of individuals who understand the organization’s objectives. He asserted, “Qualified technical experts often lack soft skills, but these can be developed over time.”

History of Project Management Trends

Reflecting on the evolution of project management, Wolf recalled a significant shift in 1998 when many organizations moved away from traditional project managers. However, as complexities in software development grew, the necessity for skilled program managers re-emerged. “The resurgence of project managers highlights the essential role they play in navigating multifaceted systems,” he noted.

Leadership and Management Restructuring

Le Manh observed a trend among leaders to restructure management hierarchies, particularly when faced with disruption. He cited the aerospace industry’s transition from centralized NASA control to entrepreneurial innovation as an example, emphasizing the need for adaptive leadership in evolving landscapes.

Integrating Sustainability in Project Management

According to Le Manh, sustainable practices are crucial in project management, despite the fluctuating popularity of the term. Establishing regulations that promote long-term sustainability is vital for organizations aiming for growth. “Companies must prioritize sustainability to create enduring business models,” he advised.

Empowering Project Managers with AI Skills

As AI continues to disrupt various sectors, Wolf urged organizations to empower project managers to lead AI-driven transformations. “Project managers must adapt and learn how to effectively integrate AI into their workflows,” he stressed. This adaptability is essential for navigating the complexities of modern projects.

The Human Component in Project Culture

The discussion highlighted the significance of the human element in project management. Le Manh pointed out that empathy and a strong cultural foundation are crucial for inspiring change and influencing stakeholders. “Project professionals must broaden their vision beyond technical execution to embrace a holistic view of organizational goals,” he concluded.

To thrive in today’s dynamic environment, project managers need to be ready to assume responsibility for uncertainties and challenges that arise, Le Manh noted. Embracing this mindset will enhance their effectiveness in leading successful projects.
