Malaysia Launches ASEAN Startup Platform to Empower Entrepreneurs
Malaysia has officially launched the ASEAN Startup platform, a dedicated digital hub designed to bolster the startup ecosystem across Southeast Asia. This innovative initiative aims to provide entrepreneurs with greater access to markets, funding, and valuable resources to thrive in a competitive landscape.
Collaboration and Leadership
Implemented by the Ministry of Sciences, Technology and Innovation (MoSTI) and managed by Cradle, the ASEAN Startup platform represents Malaysia’s commitment to fostering innovation during its presidency of ASEAN in 2025. The platform is a part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance the region’s startup landscape.
Key Features of the ASEAN Startup Platform
The platform is designed to offer startups various critical resources, including access to regional markets, financing opportunities, and a rich pool of talent. Through this initiative, entrepreneurs can gain insights into their local ecosystems, helping them navigate challenges more effectively.
Progress and Development Phases
Following a pre-launch phase in 2024, the ASEAN Startup platform is now fully operational. The initiative, which received approval in 2023, has appointed Cradle to oversee its implementation under MoSTI’s mandate. The strategic plan is divided into multiple phases, focusing on building political support and creating partnerships that facilitate cross-border collaborations.
Future Vision for Startups in ASEAN
Malaysia’s presidency outlines several phases, starting with the development and pre-launch activities in 2024. The current phase, set for 2025, aims to reinforce the startup ecosystem’s capacity and facilitate the official launch of the platform. By 2026, the plan includes establishing an ASEAN center of excellence dedicated to early-stage startups, further enhancing the region’s entrepreneurial landscape.
Networking and Mentorship Opportunities
To further support startups, Cradle organized a regional networking event called ASEAN CrossConnect during the platform’s launch. This event brought together entrepreneurs and ten renowned mentors from around the world, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange within the startup community.
Cradle’s Commitment to Innovation
Norman Matthieu Vanhaecke, CEO of Cradle, expressed excitement about the initiative, stating, “Cradle is proud to spearhead this effort and contribute to the growth of ASEAN through innovation. The platform is about more than technology; it’s focused on creating opportunities within the startup ecosystem and unlocking the potential of our ASEAN entrepreneurs.”
Vanhaecke also emphasized that the platform will feature regional programs intended to strengthen collaborative efforts across all ASEAN member states and dialogue partners, including South Korea and China. Cradle is dedicated to working closely with ASEAN countries to maximize the platform’s potential and facilitate knowledge sharing, investment access, and regional growth.
