Lucid Group Faces Challenges as Q1 2026 Sales Decline
Lucid Group experienced a strong end to 2025, doubling its electric vehicle (EV) production compared to the previous year and achieving a 55% increase in sales. However, the company encountered setbacks in the first quarter of 2026.
Significant Drop in Vehicle Sales
On Friday, Lucid reported that it sold 3,093 vehicles during the first quarter, marking a 42% decrease from the previous quarter and a slight 0.5% decline year-over-year. The company produced approximately 5,500 vehicles during this period, indicating an imbalance between production and sales.
Supplier Quality Issues Impact Deliveries
According to Lucid, the sales decline and the gap between production and deliveries are not a reflection of weak demand. Instead, the company attributed the situation to a supplier quality issue concerning its second-row seats. This issue delayed the deliveries of the Lucid Gravity SUV for 29 days.
Recall of Gravity SUVs Due to Safety Concerns
The quality concerns also led Lucid to recall over 4,000 Gravity SUVs. The company informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that some of the anchors for the SUV’s second-row seat belts had not been properly welded.
Company Assurances Amid Supply Chain Challenges
A spokesperson for Lucid, Nick Twork, confirmed the link between the decrease in sales and the supplier issues. He explained that an unapproved change made by the supplier prompted a halt in Gravity sales for most of February to prioritize vehicle quality. Nevertheless, Twork highlighted Lucid’s resilient performance, noting that January and March nearly achieved year-over-year growth.
Production Goals Remain Unchanged
In its securities filing on Friday, Lucid stated that the supplier issues have been resolved, expressing confidence that they will not hinder the company’s production targets. Lucid reaffirmed its production guidance for 2026, projecting the manufacturing of 25,000 to 27,000 vehicles. This projection represents a potential increase of up to 47% from the 18,378 EVs built in 2025.
Plans for Mass-Market Vehicle Launch
As Lucid navigates through its supply chain challenges, the company is also preparing to introduce its first vehicle built on a new, lower-cost platform designed for the mass market. The anticipated vehicle is expected to be priced around $50,000, placing it in direct competition with the forthcoming Rivian R2 SUV and established models such as the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, and Chevrolet Equinox EV.
