Latitude Launches an AI-Powered RPG Platform
If you’ve ever immersed yourself in a role-playing game (RPG), you understand the excitement of creating a unique character and embarking on thrilling adventures. Now imagine an AI-driven, text-based RPG where every interaction with non-player characters (NPCs) is entirely unscripted.
Latitude, a startup renowned for its innovative text adventure games featuring AI-generated “infinite storylines,” has just introduced a groundbreaking platform. This new offering allows users to take on the role of game designers, providing unprecedented creative freedom.
Voyage Empowers Players to Design Their Own Worlds
The AI-powered platform, named Voyage, empowers players to craft their own gaming universes with AI assistance. Users can articulate their settings, specifying regions, cities, landmarks, primary quests, and villains, all while establishing gameplay mechanics such as abilities, leveling systems, and combat challenges.
For instance, if you envision a fishing village plagued by a sea monster, the AI will generate the code necessary to manifest that concept. Users can further customize their worlds before inviting others to participate in their creation.
Diverse Experiences Across Game Genres
Voyage offers a spectrum of experiences spanning various genres, from laid-back adventures to intense quests. Being text-based, players can read along as the narrative unfolds (with optional audio narration) and type their desired character actions.
In contrast to conventional RPGs, where a character might face a goblin attack with standard options to fight or flee, players can explore unconventional scenarios—like becoming a goblin therapist—helping the creatures navigate their existential dilemmas.
Unscripted Narratives and Player Agency
As players input their actions, the AI narrates the outcomes, detailing NPC reactions. With no predetermined script, interactions can take unexpected turns, often leading to surprising—or even bizarre—conversations. For example, during testing, a troll holding our character captive began sharing his marital woes.
Character progression reflects a blend of skill and chance, akin to rolling dice in tabletop games. Characters can unlock special abilities by defeating bosses or completing quests, such as utilizing “Counterspell” to thwart an enemy’s magic. Many abilities within Voyage draw inspiration from classic Dungeons & Dragons spells, enhancing the nostalgic experience.
Introducing the World Engine
Central to Voyage is Latitude’s World Engine, a sophisticated system refined over five years. This engine incorporates multiple AI frameworks that narrate actions, manage gameplay, track characters and objects, and retain character histories, ensuring continuity throughout the gameplay. This prevents the typical experience with generic NPCs delivering repetitive lines; instead, players engage with more dynamic characters who recall past interactions. Betraying a character’s trust might lead them to avoid the player or become a rival in future scenarios.
Latitude CEO and co-founder Nick Walton explained that “characters aren’t just reactions to you; they possess their own personalities and backstories, which interact in ways that feel realistic. That is the essence of the engine’s magic.”
A Growing Presence in the AI Gaming Landscape
Latitude gained significant attention in the AI gaming sector with the launch of AI Dungeon in 2019, attracting millions of users.
Walton noted that it “exploded on the internet as one of the first opportunities for people to engage with generative AI.” The success established a vision of entirely unrestricted games and worlds. Voyage takes this vision further by developing a comprehensive platform that offers deterministic systems, challenges, and character progression, overcoming limitations faced by AI Dungeon.
Voyage’s Beta Phase and Future Plans
Currently in expanded beta testing, Voyage anticipates an open beta release later this year. Early testers have interacted with over 160,000 unique AI-generated characters, each exhibiting distinct personalities. The average user has made nearly 3,000 gameplay decisions.
Alongside the launch, Latitude announced a partnership with Google’s AI Futures Fund. The platform amalgamates its proprietary models with external ones, including Google’s Gemini Flash for image generation and Gemma for text, audio, and video.
Former Roblox Chief Business Officer Craig Donato has come on board as an investor and board member, joining other notable investors such as Album VC, Griffin Gaming Partners, Midjourney, and NFX. While Voyage remains free to play, subscription plans priced at $15, $30, and $50 will soon be available, offering enhanced AI features and unlimited gameplay actions.
While the platform caters to players of all ages, it includes some mature content similar to that found on Steam. Walton assured users that Voyage implements safety measures and parental controls to help filter inappropriate material.
