Brinc Drones Expands with New Seattle Office
In an expansive 50,000-square-foot facility in Seattle, Blake Resnick walks through the latest office of Brinc, his drone startup. While the space is still predominantly empty—fully operational by potentially November—it reflects the ambitions of a rapidly growing company looking to make a significant impact in its sector.
Targeting the Public Safety Sector
Brinc aims to revolutionize public safety by providing drones to police and public agencies across the United States. Resnick has expressed his desire for Brinc to become the “DJI of the West,” referencing the Chinese drone manufacturer to convey his goal of making Brinc synonymous with top-tier drone technology.
Founding Story and Initial Funding
A former Thiel Fellow, Resnick launched Brinc in 2017. Shortly thereafter, he caught the attention of Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, who became one of Brinc’s earliest seed investors. Since its inception, the company has attracted multiple funding rounds and was recently valued at nearly half a billion dollars, according to Resnick.
Introduction of the Guardian Drone
Recently, Brinc unveiled its latest offering—a public safety drone named “Guardian,” which Resnick claims is the closest alternative to a police helicopter ever produced. The company asserts that this drone is the “most capable 9-11 response drone” on the market today.
Advanced Features of the Guardian
The Guardian drone boasts impressive specifications, including flight speeds of up to 60 mph and a 62-minute flight time. It features thermal imaging cameras and two additional 4K cameras, each equipped with zoom capabilities. Resnick notes that even from a significant altitude, police departments can capture license plate details. Furthermore, the drone includes a powerful spotlight and a loudspeaker that surpasses the volume of a standard police siren.
Autonomous Capabilities and Emergency Supplies
Brinc describes the Guardian’s landing station, referred to as a “charging nest,” which offers fully automated battery swaps. The nest can be stocked with essential safety supplies, including defibrillators and flotation devices, requiring no human intervention.
Innovative Connectivity with Starlink
A groundbreaking feature of the Guardian is its embedded Starlink panel, marking it as the first public safety drone with such integration. This capability, provided by SpaceX’s satellite internet service, ensures that the drone maintains connectivity globally. Resnick highlights that “Starlink has never been built into a commercially produced quadcopter before,” emphasizing the drone’s enhanced range and versatility.
Market Potential and Strategic Partnerships
Recognizing the vast opportunity in public safety, Resnick notes that there are approximately 20,000 police departments and 30,000 fire departments in the U.S. He estimates that a significant portion of these agencies could utilize 911 response drones in the near future, representing a market potential of $6 billion to $8 billion. To strengthen its foothold, Brinc has partnered with the National League of Cities to promote drone-first responder programs, cultivating vital relationships with potential clients.
Market Dynamics Favoring Brinc
Recent geopolitical shifts have also benefitted Brinc, particularly as DJI previously held a dominant position in the global drone market. Following a recent ban by the Trump administration on foreign-made drones, Brinc finds itself well-positioned to fill the gap in the U.S. market. Resnick comments on this unique opportunity, asserting that there is a pressing necessity for a leading drone manufacturer for the Western world.
