BuzzFeed Ventures into AI with New Spin-off Branch Office
BuzzFeed, the U.S.-based media company renowned for its quizzes and listicles, is aiming to reinvent itself for the age of artificial intelligence. This was the message conveyed by co-founder and CEO Jonah Peretti at the recent SXSW conference in Austin, where he introduced Branch Office, a new spin-off dedicated to exploring AI in consumer applications focused on creativity and connection.
New Apps Aimed at Enhancing User Engagement
According to Peretti, Branch Office expands on BuzzFeed’s years of experimentation with AI technology. However, the launch was marred by technical glitches during his presentation, making the app demonstrations less impactful than desired. Despite these hiccups, Peretti expressed confidence in the potential of AI to foster connections and community, stating, “Using AI is the way of connecting people, building community around these pillars of culture, and taste.”
Introducing BF Island and Conjure
Bill Shouldis, the director of product at BuzzFeed and founder of Branch Office, presented two of the new applications—BF Island and Conjure. BF Island serves as a group chat platform that incorporates features for AI-enhanced photo editing. While the technology itself may not be groundbreaking, its unique selling point lies in its in-app library of trending memes and online cultural references curated by an editorial team. This aspect aims to inspire users in their creative endeavors.
Conjure: A New Photography Experience
The other app, Conjure, resembles the photo-sharing service BeReal, but offers prompts for users to capture images beyond selfies. For example, one prompt encouraged users to photograph the night sky with the question, “What lies between the trees and the moon?” This interactive element could stimulate creativity, though audience engagement during the demonstration appeared limited, leaving attendees puzzled.
Challenges in User Retention
During a Q&A session, concerns were raised about user retention, referencing BeReal’s struggle to keep users engaged after the initial novelty faded. Shouldis addressed these issues, emphasizing that Conjure is designed to evolve, incorporating varied content types—including audio and video—to foster a sense of community. He suggested that the app would adapt over time to better engage users.
Strategic Focus Amid Financial Uncertainty
BuzzFeed’s recent presentation comes on the heels of the company revealing “substantial doubt” regarding its financial sustainability. It reported a net loss of $57.3 million last year and is exploring strategies to address its liquidity challenges. As BuzzFeed focuses on character-driven content and new AI applications, the roadmap aims to leverage software development speed to better retain users.
AI’s Role in Software Development
Peretti pointed out that in this evolving landscape, “software is the new content.” However, the challenge remains in attracting and understanding users’ needs. The new apps appear to focus more on the capabilities of AI rather than on user desires, potentially jeopardizing their success in a competitive market.
