Transforming Healthcare: AI-Powered Contactless Authorization by Allegheny Health Network
Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has introduced an innovative contactless authorization system utilizing advanced AI automation technology in collaboration with Humata Health. This strategic partnership aims to streamline healthcare processes, enhancing efficiency and patient satisfaction.
Revolutionizing the Authorization Process
As one of Humata’s key investors, AHN has become the first health system to implement the platform without requiring physical contact. This evolution allows for procedural orders to be efficiently integrated into electronic health records, while Humata aggregates and submits essential clinical information seamlessly.
Success Metrics: Speed and Efficiency
Humata reports a remarkable 70% approval rate for current procedural terminology requests (CPT) within just one month of implementation. Previously, AHN collaborated with Humata on specific imaging and radiology procedures, resulting in over 200,000 automated prior authorizations each year, boasting a first-line approval rate of 96%.
Automated End-to-End Solution
The contactless authorization technology from Humata automates the entire process, from determining authorization to generating clinical packages and conducting post-authorization monitoring. For a duration of 14 days following a procedure, the platform oversees approved authorizations, checking for factors that could affect their validity, such as changes in patient insurance, diagnostic codes, or rescheduling of procedures.
The Importance of Streamlining Authorization
A recent survey by the American Medical Association (AMA) highlighted the detrimental effects of the prior authorization process on patient outcomes and healthcare provider well-being. The study emphasizes that unnecessary delays negatively impact patient care, leading to increased costs due to extra consultations, unforeseen hospital stays, and out-of-pocket expenses for patients.
Legislative Efforts for Reform
In response to the challenges posed by prior authorizations, legislators from the House of Representatives have proposed a bipartisan bill designed to reduce medically unnecessary delays. This legislation aims to reform health insurance practices by allowing board-certified physicians in the same specialty to make authorization decisions, enhancing the efficiency of the healthcare system.
A Bright Future for AI in Healthcare
Humata Health, an AI-driven company led by a physician and backed by a range of investors, including Optum Ventures and Blue Venture Fund, is at the forefront of this healthcare revolution. The partnership with Allegheny Health Network aims to alleviate the administrative burden on care teams while expediting patient care pathways, ultimately improving clinician experiences and patient outcomes.
“Removing the administrative load from our care teams, while accelerating the path to patient care is central to our mission,” said Morgan Kroskie, a director at AHN. “The innovative technology from Humata delivers significant value to our organization, and we look forward to expanding its application across more procedures and service lines.”
