Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the former CEO of the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX, is at the center of growing speculation over whether he could receive a presidential pardon. With SBF facing a lengthy prison sentence for its role in FTX’s collapse, rumors began swirling after billionaire Elon Musk said he would be “shocked if this didn’t happen.”
Musk’s comments sparked new discussions about a possible pardon, raising questions about the role of politics in SBF’s future.
Conviction and sentence
FTX Crypto Exchange Failedwhose empire collapsed in November 2022, was found guilty on all seven counts following a five-week trial that concluded in November 2023.
Therefore, SBF was sentenced to 25 years in prisonwhile the American government had requested a sentence between 40 and 50 years old. His legal team had argued for a much shorter sentence of just six years.
Despite this condemnation, the idea of a pardon gained ground. SBF’s close ties to the Democratic Party, to which it was one of its largest donors, led some to believe that its political ties could lead to a reduced sentence or even a full pardon.
Furthermore, FTX’s upcoming bankruptcy proceedings, which are expected to begin in January 2025, have fueled the idea that SBF’s pardon could help the country emerge from the scandal.
Elon Musk fuels speculation
Speculation has reached a new level after Elon Musk’s comments on X, formerly Twitter. Musk said he would be “shocked if it didn’t happen,” further fueling rumors of a possible pardon.
His remark, while not a prediction, added weight to ongoing discussions.
A pardon? Not so fast
However, the chances of President Joe Biden granting a pardon to the SBF appear slim. According to Polymarket, a prediction market platform, the probability of obtaining a pardon is only 16%. This low number reflects general market skepticism, indicating that most think a pardon is unlikely.
Biden’s record and political implications
Although the chances of obtaining a pardon may seem remote, recent political events provide some context. President Joe Biden has already issued pardons, including two to his son, Hunter Biden, who has faced legal challenges of his own. These actions have sparked controversy and raised questions about the political influence behind such decisions.
Some also pointed to the fact that six charges against SBF were dropped, which could be seen as another sign that he could receive leniency due to his political connections.
