Banks and hedge funds have always gave priority to the officebut fintech has historically been the exception. Many of the largest and highest-paying companies prioritize remote work, and others offer a high percentage of positions to remote workers. We’ve gone through the top 21 of our list of the highest paid fintechsbreaking down the number of positions advertised as open to remote workers.
Software engineers working remotely will be happy to know that the two highest paying fintechs for engineers are still remote first. But while Plaid And Open Sea can pay well, but there are currently only 41 jobs open between them, so getting in won’t be easy.
When we looked at these numbers in August last yeara little less than 50% of jobs Band were available remotely. NOW, as jobs soarthis figure fell by almost 10 percentage points. At Monzo, the UK’s highest-paying fintech, the ratio of remote jobs fell by more than 20 percentage points. Coinbase is hiring a lot more people, but, surprisingly, its remote employment rate is down 50 percentage points.
Fintechs with virtually no work-from-home options include Robinhood’s current defendersand equity management infrastructure platform Carta. Carta has been adamant about its office stance since Covid staff returned, while Robinhood has accelerated its office push in recent years. Robinhood staff generates a very high amount of revenue per employeeso maybe she can afford to pay for office space.
Beyond employee satisfaction, there are other reasons why employers might opt for remote work. For example, pay transparency laws in New York and San Francisco (where many of these fintechs are based) don’t necessarily apply to remote jobs, meaning employers can overlook them and potentially offer lower wages. Many, like Stripe and ServiceTitan, publish salary information anyway.
Ultimately, the value of a role, good or bad, is about more than just how distant it is. Glassdoor reviews of Robinhood in 2024 praise the “opportunity to learn” from “some really solid people” but criticize the work-life balance. Plaid reviews, meanwhile, say the work-life balance “isn’t crazy” with “plenty of opportunities for career growth,” but that collaborating with teams from different regions can be frustrating. Stripe assures its teams are fully hybrid/in-office, or fully remote, to compensate for this.
