Revolutionizing the Inbox Experience
Email has often become a source of frustration rather than excitement. For those who remember the early days of Gmail, when beta invites created a buzz, the stakes were high. However, as the years rolled on, many startups have ventured to reinvent email, only to deliver marginal improvements by adding features to the same conventional format. Today, a new contender is changing the narrative entirely.
A Fresh Approach to Email Management
Extra, the inaugural product from the innovative consumer technology company BuildForever, offers a unique take on email organization. Eschewing traditional elements such as subject lines, folders, and tags, Extra provides an inbox structured around users’ lives. Its “Today” tab consolidates everything important into a single, actionable overview that updates in real-time, distilling critical information from a cluttered inbox.
Customizable Organization Meets Real-Time Insights
As emails flow in, Extra intelligently categorizes them into custom tabs based on users’ lives—ranging from family activities and travel plans to finances and newsletters. This reinvention not only enhances personal organization but also empowers users to manage their inbox with newfound clarity and purpose.
An Insight Born from Personal Struggle
The inspiration for Extra emerged from a common frustration: a chaotic inbox. Naveen Gavini, co-founder and CEO of BuildForever, encountered this dilemma himself—his work email was meticulously organized, while his personal inbox became an overwhelming “wall of to-dos.” This dichotomy led to missed messages and feelings of entrapment within his own emails.
A Pragmatic, User-Centric Solution
Extra aims to disrupt traditional email paradigms by introducing an innovative interface combined with underlying AI technology. Importantly, the team is not marketing Extra as merely an AI application; rather, they focus on solving everyday challenges that users face in email management. Gavini emphasizes the need for straightforward solutions rather than attempting to be a catch-all AI assistant.
Redefining Daily Email Interactions
Instead of diving into a standard inbox layout, Extra opens with a “Today” view that showcases actionable items needing attention, items pertinent to the day, and general knowledge that may be beneficial. Each task is treated similarly to a to-do list, simplifying the process of tracking obligations. Among the features is a “Daily Cleanup” section that helps users sift through low-priority emails, encouraging information hygiene.
Unlocking a Personalized Experience
Extra also enhances the email experience with designated tabs for news, events, and shopping updates, transforming email interactions into tailored experiences rather than sources of clutter. By displaying promotional content in an engaging manner, Extra helps users find what they genuinely wish to see without it being buried under overwhelming notifications.
Engagement Through Intuitive Design
Beta testing has revealed promising metrics, with users collectively unsubscribing from over two million emails annually and transforming four million emails into concise summaries. Extra is currently rolling out on iOS and the web for those on its waitlist, inviting a new era of email interaction that the founders hope will inspire future expansions into messaging and calendar functionalities.
Aimed at Creating Joyful Experiences
Initial hands-on testing has shown that Extra is both polished and user-friendly, successfully making email interactions far more enjoyable. Co-founders Gavini, Steven Ramkumar, and Albert Pereta strive to instill principles of delight and inspiration into an otherwise mundane task. The company, bolstered by $9.5 million in seed funding, plans to further develop its offerings while keeping Extra free for its users, with monetization strategies projected for the future.
