Breaking the barriers in Fintech: accelerating action for diversity and leadership

Breaking Down Barriers: The Push for Diversity in Fintech Leadership

The Call for Acceleration on International Women’s Day

Ugne Buracine, CEO of Payabl, emphasizes the urgent need for action as we celebrate International Women’s Day. “This year’s theme focuses on accelerating efforts towards gender diversity, especially in Fintech, where women remain underrepresented in leadership roles,” she remarks. Buracine stresses that firms must not only hire women but also establish mechanisms for their career advancement.

Diversity as a Business Imperative

Buracine advocates for a shift in corporate culture, stating that diversity should be viewed as a business strength rather than merely a superficial endeavor. “We must confront systemic challenges like biased promotion structures and lack of mentorship that hinder women’s progress,” she explains. By creating inclusive work environments, companies can attract and retain top talent.

Authenticity and Personal Growth

Ugne Buracine shares her personal journey, highlighting the inherent expectations placed on women leaders. “We often feel the pressure to conform to specific molds — strong yet not overbearing, confident yet not intimidating,” she reflects. Buracine encourages women to embrace their authentic selves as a strategy for overcoming these barriers.

The Funding Gap in Women-led Fintech

Despite notable progress over the past decade, women-led startups in Fintech continue to face significant funding disparities compared to their male counterparts. “Investing in women-led businesses and fostering networking opportunities are critical to hastening progress,” Buracine adds. This highlights the importance of addressing the financial limitations that many women entrepreneurs encounter.

Driving Change at the Organizational Level

Jolita Strasunskaite, Chief of People at Payabl, stresses that real diversity must begin on a personal level and transform how organizations approach hiring and promotions. “Leaders must actively consider how they can nurture a diverse talent pool,” she urges.

Strasunskaite notes that companies are beginning to recognize the benefits of diverse leadership, which can enhance decision-making and improve outcomes. “The challenge lies in ensuring that old biases do not resurface in new forms,” she warns, urging leaders to remain vigilant against systemic obstacles.

Visibility and Empowerment in Technical Roles

Thekla Paschali, Director of Technology at Payabl, points out that while female representation in management has improved, women remain underrepresented in technical roles. “Visibility is crucial for change,” she notes, emphasizing the need for the Fintech sector to amplify women’s voices and ensure equal funding opportunities for female entrepreneurs.

Paschali underscores the significance of supportive leadership initiatives and policies that facilitate work-life balance, such as flexible schedules and parental leave, as essential drivers for transformation.

Beyond Representation: Making Voices Heard

Esfira Zaka, Director of Marketing at Payabl, argues that the focus of gender equality conversations should shift from mere representation to the quality of women’s contributions in Fintech. “It’s essential for women to be valued for their ideas and insights rather than merely seen as gender representatives,” she asserts.

Zaka highlights the transformative impact of organizations like the European Women’s Payment Network (EWPN) in addressing the real challenges women face in Fintech. “Fostering support networks and sharing experiences are vital for creating lasting change,” she emphasizes.

The Path Forward: Inclusivity Without Quotas

At Payabl, diversity is a core commitment rather than an afterthought. Zaka reiterates that organizations don’t need quotas to achieve balance. “If companies focus on hiring the best candidates based on merit, diversity will naturally follow,” she concludes.

This approach not only mirrors demographic realities but also positions companies for sustainable success in an increasingly diverse marketplace. By championing inclusivity, organizations can empower all employees and pave the way for innovation and resilience in Fintech.
