London Stock Exchange Group Introduces Real-Time Vessel Tracking API
London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) has launched a new Vessel Tracking API in partnership with satellite operator Kinéis and Wood Mackenzie Vesseltracker. This innovative solution provides users with access to comprehensive, real-time data regarding shipping and commodity flows.
The API utilizes Automatic Identification System (AIS) data captured from a combination of terrestrial, satellite, and roaming networks, enabling users to gain global visibility into vessel movements and operational statuses.
In addition to data collection, the API incorporates a proprietary LSEG model that validates incoming signals and identifies anomalous positions. This functionality addresses challenges posed by interference and signals from decommissioned vessels, meeting increasing customer demand for actionable AIS data that can be integrated into enterprise workflows.
Fabrice Maille, head of shipping, weather, and agriculture at LSEG, highlighted the enhanced decision-making capabilities provided by this service. He stated that by merging LSEG’s proprietary analytics with the industry-leading AIS coverage from Kinéis and Wood Mackenzie Vesseltracker, they are able to offer reliable vessel tracking data across global commodities and maritime markets.
The quality and scope of this data offering are significantly bolstered by the strategic collaborations. Kinéis enhances the service with high-resolution, satellite-based AIS coverage facilitated by its constellation of 25 nanosatellites, which penetrate challenging remote ocean areas that are often difficult to monitor with conventional methods.
Simultaneously, Wood Mackenzie Vesseltracker contributes its extensive network of over 3,400 AIS receiver stations, capturing vessel movements during more than 95% of commercial port visits worldwide. This collaboration ensures a robust and comprehensive approach to vessel tracking.
The Vessel Tracking API is easily accessible to clients and is also integrated directly within LSEG Workspace and the Interactive Map. This seamless integration allows clients to analyze shipping activities within the broader context of market data and existing workflows, providing a comprehensive view of maritime and commodities intelligence.
