Littlepay Partners with Google and Go-Ahead Group to Innovate Transit Payments
Payment processing specialist Littlepay has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Google and the Go-Ahead Group to create an alternative to traditional physical transit passes. Passengers using Go-Ahead’s Brighton & Hove Buses can now buy and utilize prepaid travel passes directly through their Google Wallet, streamlining the payment process.
Innovative Payment System Enhances User Experience
The newly implemented system operates similarly to standard pay-as-you-go contactless payments. Users need only to tap their phones upon boarding the bus. This initiative eliminates the requirement to download operator-specific apps, search for QR codes, or print paper tickets, making daily travel more straightforward and convenient for passengers.
Introduction of the CAATT Model
This launch marks the first deployment of Littlepay’s Card As Authority to Travel (CAATT) model, designed specifically for prepaid passes. Go-Ahead is executing the initial live use of this innovative technology. When a passenger taps their device, Littlepay quickly connects the digital wallet to the travel rights associated with the prepaid pass, ensuring that no additional fares accrue while the pass remains valid.
Testing Grounds within Go-Ahead’s Network
The Go-Ahead network, which operates a fleet of 5,000 vehicles and processes over 45 million transactions each year, provides an optimal environment to test and expand this payment infrastructure. The pilot project is expected to lead to a wider rollout across other Go-Ahead operators and the Littlepay ecosystem, showcasing how local innovations can swiftly scale on a global level.
Enhancements from Google Transit Insights
This development builds on the earlier successes of Google Transit Insights, which integrates mobile app features directly into digital payment wallets. Earlier in 2025, Go-Ahead completed a UK-wide rollout of Transit Insights, allowing passengers across the country to seamlessly access journey and payment information.
Adapting to Modern Consumer Behavior
The collaborating firms believe that integrating prepaid passes caters to the rapidly changing habits of consumers, as contactless payments and digital wallets become increasingly vital. Furthermore, this integration lays the groundwork for future enhancements, including enabling concessionary travelers to verify their eligibility for discounts directly through the wallet.
Industry Insight on Driving Digital Innovation
Sarah McLaughlin, senior business development manager at Littlepay, underscored this achievement as a significant milestone for the public transport sector. She described the launch as a global first, showcasing a future of digital travel that is effortless and inclusive.
Sean McLaughlin, group senior solutions manager at the Go-Ahead Group, expressed optimism about the recent advancements, emphasizing the potential for further enhancements amid the growing popularity of Open Loop transit payments. Additionally, Jonathan Hill, head of transit partnerships at Google Wallet, highlighted the practical benefits this system offers daily commuters, such as the convenience of purchasing monthly tickets alongside the capability for users to track their pay-as-you-go spending and monitor progress toward daily or weekly travel caps within the app.
