Amazon Web Services (AMZN) partners with Oracle (ORCL) as part of a new strategic partnership, launching Oracle@AWS DatabaseAWS CEO Matt Garman said the partnership was driven by a desire to offer something unique and valuable to customers.
AI is a major focus for AWS. Garman tells Yahoo Finance, “When the generative AI wave came along, we took a step back and asked, ‘How do customers really want to take advantage of this?’ They want a really secure infrastructure. They want low cost. They want all the best features possible. So we built an enterprise platform so customers can actually embed AI into their applications. And that means it’s not a single model. It’s not a single feature. It’s not a single particular application. It’s a platform where you can use all of these features.” He explains that by using a platform approach, customers can use a specific large-language model or multiple large-language models in whatever way works best for them.
On the perception that AWS might be seen as lagging behind Microsoft (MSFT) in the AI race, Garman says: “At Amazon, we have a saying that we’re willing to be misunderstood for long periods of time. And for us, we felt it was more important to build a foundational platform on which customers could actually create real business value in their applications, rather than rushing out and quickly releasing chatbot technology… But that’s not really where the ultimate value of this technology is going to come from. It’s not just about chatbots.”
