Netflix Launches Standalone Kids Gaming App
Netflix has introduced a new standalone app dedicated to children’s games, named Netflix Playground. Announced on Monday, this app is included with a Netflix subscription and features no advertisements or in-app purchases.
Expanding Children’s Gaming Library
The platform aims to provide children with access to an “ever-growing” library of games tailored for younger audiences. Netflix Playground debuts with titles showcasing beloved characters from popular children’s shows.
Availability and Accessibility
Targeting children aged eight and under, the app is currently available in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a global rollout scheduled for April 28. Accessible on both iOS and Android, it allows offline gameplay, which Netflix highlights as an ideal feature for long airplane journeys or shopping trips.
Diverse Gaming Options for Young Players
Among the initial offerings is “Playtime With Peppa Pig,” where players can engage in various playful activities in Peppa’s world. Additional titles include a “Sesame Street” game focused on memory matching and connect-the-dots activities, as well as games like “Let’s Color,” “Storybots,” and “Bad Dinosaurs.” These games are designed to engage children while encouraging learning and creativity.
A Vision for Interactive Storytelling
John Derderian, Netflix’s Vice President of Animation Series and Kids & Family TV, emphasized the goal of the app to create a space where children can not only watch their favorite stories but also immerse themselves in those narratives. “We’re creating a seamless destination for discovery, learning, and play,” he mentioned, adding that experiences such as reuniting with characters from favorite shows could become a cherished part of family time.
Shifting Strategies in Netflix’s Gaming Endeavors
Netflix initially ventured into gaming in 2021 with ambitious aspirations. However, the company has since reassessed its strategy, scaling back its plans as games struggled to gain a foothold in the market. This shift has led to the closure of several gaming studios, including notable names like Boss Fight and Spry Fox.
Exploring New Avenues in Gaming
In late 2022, Netflix expanded its gaming repertoire with a foray into TV gaming, introducing a series of titles meant to be enjoyed in groups, including versions of Tetris and Pictionary. The company has acknowledged its commitment to cloud gaming as a priority but admits the initiative is still in its infancy.
