Visa Direct Partners with Moonrise to Enhance Nordic Payment Solutions
Visa Direct is partnering with Moonrise, a Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) provider powered by the Nordic challenger bank Lunar, to gain access to local payment infrastructures across Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. This strategic collaboration significantly enhances Visa Direct’s capacity to support real-time domestic payments and local account access for international businesses operating in or expanding into the Nordic region.
Simplifying a Complex Market
Through this partnership, Visa Direct aims to bolster its global payments platform with tailored Nordic capabilities. By integrating Moonrise’s extensive suite of local accounts and payment infrastructures, clients will have access to virtual accounts, domestic clearing, pay-ins, and pay-outs across regional payment schemes—all through a single API. This streamlined approach removes unnecessary friction for businesses navigating the complexities of local payment systems.
This initiative builds upon an already established relationship between Visa and Lunar, transforming it from isolated point solutions into a comprehensive, scalable payment offering for Visa Direct’s global clientele. Philip Konopik, Senior Vice President and Head of Commercial & Money Movement Solutions at Visa Europe, highlighted that access to genuine local accounts is increasingly becoming a crucial differentiator in European markets.

Klausen noted that by simplifying access to local payment rails, Moonrise empowers global businesses to deliver localized market experiences more efficiently and reliably. This removes the need for multiple local integrations, thereby accelerating their ability to scale within the region.
Launched in 2023, Moonrise is specifically designed to assist financial institutions and payment companies in establishing and expanding their presence across the Nordic countries. To date, it has formed partnerships with 19 global platforms, collaborating with notable industry leaders such as CurrencyCloud, TerraPay, Trustly, and Wise.
