London Stock Exchange Group Unveils Redesigned ESG Scores
London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), a leading global provider of financial market infrastructure and data, has launched a comprehensive redesign of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Scores. This initiative responds to increasing regulatory scrutiny and growing criticism of current sustainability rating methodologies in the market.
Modular Components Enhance Investor Insights
The new scoring system is composed of three modular components: Theme Scores, an overall ESG Score, and ESG Score Plus. This structure allows investors to differentiate between operational sustainability performance, broader sustainability impacts, and ESG-related risks, including controversies or exposure to sovereign issues.
Comprehensive Data Underpins the New Scores
The revamped ESG Scores are derived from over 240 indicators spanning 12 distinct ESG themes. The scores primarily draw on corporate disclosures, with supplementary data from external sources as necessary, encompassing a diverse range of more than 16,000 companies worldwide.
Research Highlights Resilience and Performance Trends
Findings from the accompanying research reveal that the new scores maintain relative stability over time. Notably, the median ESG Score for large and mid-cap companies increased from 2.3 in 2022 to 2.6 in 2024. The most significant improvements were observed in China, Japan, and the broader Asia-Pacific region, indicating a positive trend in sustainability performance.
Assessment Reveals Valuable Insights
The analysis also suggests that ESG scores show little to no correlation with commonly analyzed equity factors. This finding underscores that ESG scores should be regarded primarily as informative risk signals rather than indicators of consistent outperformance.
Cyclical Trends in ESG Index Performance
An examination of established ESG-focused index families, such as the 25-year-old FTSE4Good series, reveals that performance is often cyclical. Historical data indicates that periods of relative outperformance tend to be followed by prolonged downturns, mirroring patterns found in traditional style factors.
Core Principles Drive the Redesign Framework
This redesign emerged from a multi-year research program that included publishing peer-reviewed studies on ESG score construction. Built upon 25 years of sustainable finance innovation, the new framework is timely, addressing rising regulatory expectations and investor scrutiny in the ESG ratings landscape. The framework emphasizes four core principles: the creation of modular scores that simplify sustainability data for effective portfolio construction, a materiality-driven approach offering a coherent view of corporate sustainability performance, full transparency concerning indicators and methodologies supported by publicly available data, and a clear distinction between performance, risk, and impact to eliminate any conceptual confusion.
