The Future of Finance: Key Challenges and Skills for Success
In a recent survey conducted by the Association of International CPAs & Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, finance and accounting executives highlighted artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation, and the need for new skills as their foremost concerns, surpassing traditional topics like innovation and growth.
Insights from the Future of Finance Summit
During the Future of Finance Summit last week, 175 senior finance and accounting professionals shared their perspectives on the primary challenges within the sector. The findings revealed that nearly three-quarters (73%) of executives identified generative AI and AI as the most pressing issues. Additionally, 60% pointed to the rapid pace of digital transformation, while 58% emphasized the necessity for new skill sets among their teams.
Ranking of Challenges in Finance
Interestingly, innovation and growth were recognized as the fourth most significant challenge, with 56% of respondents citing these concerns. This ranking indicates a shift in focus for finance professionals, who are increasingly valuing technological advancements and educational needs over traditional growth metrics.
The Interconnectedness of AI, Digital Transformation, and Skills
Tom Hood, executive vice president of business growth and engagement at AICPA, explained this trend by noting the interrelationship between these four elements. “The way they achieve innovation and growth is through AI and digital transformation and the need for new skills,” he stated. Hood anticipates that these challenges will trend upward in the coming year.
Essential Skills for Future Finance Professionals
The survey also illuminated the skills deemed indispensable for finance professionals moving forward. A significant 82% of executives underscored the importance of strategic and critical thinking. Furthermore, 62% acknowledged the need for a blend of AI and digital skills, while 60% emphasized the value of communication and storytelling.
The Evolving Nature of the Finance Profession
Hood remarked, “Most of these skills and the main issues are not new surprises. We are at a strategic inflection point where we are poised to transition from a profession of the past to a profession of the future in corporate finance and accounting.” He emphasized that finance professionals must shift their focus from merely producing financial statements to projecting the business’s future impacts.
Conclusion: Navigating the Future of Finance
As the finance and accounting landscape evolves, professionals must adapt to these emerging challenges by embracing new technologies and enhancing their skills. By focusing on AI, digital transformation, and vital soft skills, finance executives can position themselves and their organizations for sustained success in a rapidly changing environment.
